BIO
Douglas
Wood is currently a working WGA writer, development executive, producer
and script doctor.
He
has been Vice President of Animation Production and Creative
Affairs for Universal, Warner Bros. and Turner Pictures where
he oversaw the script development and production of such films
as the Annie Award-winning IRON GIANT and CATS DON’T DANCE
as well as the live-action/animated feature, OSMOSIS JONES with
Bill Murray and Chris Rock. Wood is currently working with Animation Lab, Israel's first animated feature film studio, as Director and Executive Producer for the studio's debut feature,
THE WILD BUNCH.
Wood
began his executive career at Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment
where he began as an in-house Story Analyst, reading and evaluating
hundreds of screenplays.
Within
a year Wood was promoted to Director of Animation where he developed
the feature films, BALTO and WE’RE BACK! and was the creative
executive for the Emmy-winning Warner Bros. television series,
TINY TOON ADVENTURES and ANIMANIACS for which he was also Story
Editor. He also developed the prime-time CBS Christmas special,
A WISH FOR WINGS THAT WORK based on the characters of Pulitzer
prize-winning cartoonist, Berkeley Breathed of Bloom County
fame.
While
at Amblin, Wood was a mentor in the acclaimed Chesterfield Project
in which he guided screenwriters through the screenwriting process.
After
ten years as an executive, Douglas Wood returned to his passion
for writing. He developed-for-television the Playhouse Disney
series, LITTLE EINSTEINS, and also wrote for the show which
currently airs on the Disney Channel. The series is based on
the successful line of Baby Einstein products. He has also written
for the Playhouse Disney series HANDY MANNY and JOHNNY AND THE
SPRITES.
Wood
was the Story Editor for the third season of the popular Playhouse
Disney series, JOJO’S CIRCUS for which he’s written
numerous episodes and prime-time specials. He also wrote the musical
stge show for Playhouse Live! at Disney's California Adventure Theme Park
which features MICKEY'S PLAYHOUSE, LITTLE EINSTEINS, MY FRIENDS TIGGER AND POOH,
and HANDY MANNY.
Wood
wrote the DVD animated feature, CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE: THE
ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN, starring Frankie Muniz, William H. Macy,
Lacey Chabert and Felicity Huffman, based on the best-selling
book series. Wood also wrote the feature-length Warner Bros.
animated mystery, SCOOBY-DOO AND THE MONSTER OF MEXICO, available
on DVD at Netflix and most video stores.
The animated series, MAMA MIRABELLE'S HOME MOVIES which Wood created for National
Geographic is now airing on PBS. Wood also is the author of WHEN MAMA MIRABELLE
GETS HOME, the children's book published by National Geographic/Random House,
which is a companion to the series.
Wood’s
live-action screenplay, AS IS, a comedy-drama set in the funky subculture
of garage sales and flea markets, has been optioned by Colleen
Camp Productions and indy producer Holly Wiersma.
Prior
to his executive career, Wood was an actor and writer. He wrote
and performed original material as a member of Chicago’s
famed comedy troupe, SECOND CITY.
Following
Second City, Wood became one-half of the comedy duo, the FINE
LINE which performed their incisive sketches on male-female
relationships at comedy clubs and theatres all across the country
including The Improv, The Comedy Store and The Playboy Clubs
as well as two appearances on the MERV GRIFFIN SHOW.
This
led to a position as staff writer and series regular on the
MOTOWN REVUE WITH SMOKEY ROBINSON, a musical/comedy series of
NBC.
The
FINE LINE was nominated for an Emmy award for Best Comedy Special
for Cable, and Wood received Outstanding Actor awards from both
Chicago’s Joseph Jefferson Committee and Dramalogue for
the Equity stage productions in Chicago and Los Angeles.
Wood’s
regional acting includes roles in Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s
production of PHILADELPHIA, HERE I COME! with John Malkovich,
Joan Allen, John Mahoney and Gary Cole; the Jefferson award-winning
Midwest premiere of CLASS ENEMY for the Next Theatre Company;
and the Midwest premiere of the Pulitzer prize-winning drama,
THE SHADOW BOX at Chicago’s Forum Theatre.
Wood
has conducted specialized improvisation workshops for artists at California
Institute of the Arts, Bezalal Academy of Arts and Design at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem, as well as for the CBS Diversity Institute’s
Writers Mentoring Program. He currently volunteers his time,
conducting improvisation workshops for senior citizens at the
Motion Picture and Television Fund (the “Old Actor’s
Home”).
Wood
has been on numerous panels and is a frequent lecturer at California
State University – Northridge.
